Malam Yakubu I, born circa 1770, was a venerable Islamic scholar and the trusted flagbearer of Shehu Usman Dan Fodio. Chosen to govern the vast eastern territory, he founded the city of Bauchi, raised its ancient earthen defensive walls, and established an enduring tradition of scholastic patronage, civic justice, and royal hospitality.
